The problem
Most mail clients answer "reply" with a new window, placed on top of the conversation whose details you needed. So you write, close it to check a date, and open it again.
What Email does
The reply bar sits at the bottom of the conversation. The thread stays where it is, scrollable, while you write; quote a line by selecting it. Send, and you are still looking at the conversation, which is where the next message will land anyway. For a longer reply the full composer is one keystroke away.
